Product Description
Brother's XL2610 is a 59 stitch function free arm sewing machine. The free arm feature allows you to sew cuffs or pant legs easily and convert the machine back to a flat bed sewing area for larger items. The machine features an automatic needle threader and built-in thread cutter to make setting up your machine easy. This model also has a built-in 4 step buttonholer with a stitch balance control to make it simple for you to make buttonholes on any garment. The XL2610 has a drop in bobbin system which is easy to thread and allows you to see the remaining bobbin thread. The built in stitches include quilting stitches, garment construction stitches, decorative sewing stitches, stretch stitches, and a blind hem stitch to make sewing hems a breeze. The accessories and feet included with the machine will help you with quilting, zipper insertion, darning, buttonholes and sewing on buttons. Sewing feet on the XL2610 feature Brother's quick change design. The XL2610 has a built-in stitch length and width control as well as a dial thread tension control so you can adjust your stitches as needed. The XL2610 is lightweight and portable with a built-in handle for easy carrying. The machine has a built-in light to illuminate the sewing area as well as a safety power and light switch. Instructions included with the XL2610 are bilingual in English and Spanish.

5 out of 5 stars Great Buy!   July 7, 2006

I love my new sewing machine! My husband, who had never sewn with a machine before, set it up quickly and we both can use it easily. It's so easy to use I am planning several more sewing projects for this summer. On my last project, the machine had no problems sewing through denim seams and pockets. I am very pleased with all of the features (59 different stitches, a double needle for gathering, needle threader, button foot) I got with this relatively inexpensive sewing machine. Everything is working great so far. I would recommend this machine for anyone looking for the basics plus the capability for more advanced sewing down the road.

5 out of 5 stars Everything I needed...   June 5, 2009

I consider myself a professional seamstress but the only machines I regularly used were Singers - one antique featherweight, and an older industrial machine. I didn't have access to fancy stitches before, but the garmets I was constructing were not stretchy so the straight stiches worked fine.
Now I'm interested in stretch garmets and I chose this machine because of the variety of stretch stitches. I have already used the Stretch Blind Hem stitch to shorten some of my stretchy slacks, and it sews perfectly. I didn't have to adjust the tension or anything else; i just followed the threading instructions (making SURE to thread in the right direction) and it was a breeze right out of the box.

PROS:
*Variety of stitches
*Variety of STRETCH stitches
*Ease of selecting the stitch (just turning a dial)
*Easy to thread and operate
*Additional foots will come in handy (like the narrow hem foot); additional foots available for purchase too
*Stitches smoothly through everything I have so far...although I've not attempted to stitch through multiple layers of denim yet.

CONS:
*As other reviews mentioned, the presser foot lift is made of plastic. I am used to it being directly behind the needle, but in this model it is to the right of the needle, so I need to get used to using my right hand to lift the presser foot lever
*Same as another review about the light - it is to the left of the needle and I'm used to it being to the right.
*It is slightly larger than I expected

OVERALL: I would recommend. I am very happy I bought this machine (and at a very reasonable price). I love the variety of stretch and regular stitches (i'll be using some decorative stitches on paper for scrapbooking as well!). Sounds smooth when stitching, easy to control the speed of stitching, overall easy to use. 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprises   December 30, 2007

I've owned this machine for 2 months. I'm a beginner sewer and fine it more than meets my needs.

The following are a few things I was pleasantly surprised to find that the machine had after I bought it:
1) It has bobbin and needle threading instructions on the machine as well as in the manual and quick reference guide.
2) It has a built in handle carved into the back of the arm. You can't see this in the pictures.
3) The machine is quiet, compared to my previous 1970s era Singer.
4) The bobbin cover is transparent so you can see who you are running low on bobbin thread.

The only fault I have found thus far is that the light is on the left of the needle. My previous machine had the light on the right. The arm casts a little bit of a shadow and the light doesn't help as much as it would if it was on the right. Obviously, good lighting in the room will fix this problem so it is not a big deal.

I bought this sewing machine for my 11 yr old granddaughter. It's easy to use and has all the functions a beginning sewer needs. A great price for a basic machine.

5 out of 5 stars I love this machine!   April 3, 2008

I haven't sewn since high school, and this machine makes it super easy. I love the automatic needle threader. Winding a bobbin and switching out thread takes just a minute or two. Super easy to thread the machine. Super easy to insert the bobbin. (I did have a problem with thread tension until I figured out I wasn't bringing the thread around the right way). Great stitch options. I've been thinking of new projects just so I can use it more! I will say I'm not a professional seamstress, so I can't account for the "quality" of the stitches. But they work great for what I need!
